Scottie Martin's Web-Page Lissencephaly Last Updated 12/02/07
Hi, my name is Scottie Martin and I was born on May 11, 2005. I was born with Lissencephaly, a very rare brain malformation characterized by the absence of normal convolutions (folds) and ridges on the brain surface. Lissencephaly is most commonly known as "smooth brain". The type of Lissencephaly I have is called Isolated Lissencephaly Sequence. The lissencephaly is the only major birth defect I have. Although I look normal, lissencephaly causes me to have many challenges, affecting both my physical and mental development. I cannot sit-up unassisted, crawl or walk. I try very hard to accomplish the things I can do, but everyday is a struggle and I always try my best. I have a lot of challenges ahead of me, but I am determined to beat the odds. Although I have Lissencephaly, Lissencephaly does not have me. I hope this web-site will help people understand my condition, and will open people's hearts to children with disabilities. Please don't forget to sign my guestbook. You can leave well wishes or, if you are a parent of a child with Lissencephaly, please feel free to ask questions.

Special Child... You weren't like the other children, And God was well aware, You'd need a caring family, With love enough to share. And so He sent you to us, And much to our surprise, You haven't been a challenge, But a blessing in disguise. Your winning smiles and laughter, The pleasures you impart, Far outweigh your special needs, And melt the coldest heart. We're proud that we've been chosen, To help you learn and grow, The joy that you have brought us, Is more than you can know. A precious gift from Heaven, A treasure from above, A child whose taught us many things, But most of all - Real Love. By, Sharon Harris
